Healing Begins With Safety: Finding Rest in God for Your Mind, Body, and Spirit

Recently, I have been learning more about the importance of safety when it comes to the nervous system and our overall health. We now understand that when we live in a state of fear, it sends a powerful signal to the brain that essentially says, “you are not safe.” That signal can influence the body in real ways—holding onto excess weight, experiencing pain without a clear physical cause, and developing maladaptive patterns that are meant to protect us.
But here’s the shift: this isn’t your body malfunctioning—it’s your body trying to protect you. Your nervous system is not broken. It is responding based on the information it’s receiving. When that information is rooted in perceived danger rather than actual danger, the body can become stuck in protective patterns that were never meant to be permanent. And this may be one of the reasons so many of us are struggling with our health today.
The noise doesn’t help. Constant notifications. Always being “on.” Doom-scrolling the worst headlines. Searching endlessly for the next fix for what feels broken in your body. Even that constant searching can quietly reinforce the message: something is wrong… you are not safe.
But here is the good news— Healing flows where there is safety. And the Bible tells us that we find true safety in God, our loving Father.
God Designed You as Mind, Body, and Spirit
God created you as a whole person—spirit, soul, and body—deeply connected and constantly communicating with one another. Your thoughts, your physical body, and your spiritual life are not separate systems; they are intricately woven together, each influencing the other. Scripture affirms this beautifully,
“Dear friend, I hope all is well with you and that you are as healthy in body as you are strong in spirit” (3 John 1:2)
“Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think” (Romans 12:2).
Your thoughts affect your body. Your spiritual life affects your physical health. And your sense of safety—or lack of it—shapes how your entire system responds. This is not accidental. This is God’s intelligent design—and within that design, He has already provided a divine solution.
The Root Issue: A Lack of Safety
In the holistic world, we are taught to get to the root cause of the issue we are facing. When this root issue is not easily found, we search and search so that we can address the root cause and fix it. This, in itself can send a signal to the brain of perceived danger—something needs fixing. However, when your body feels unsafe, it shifts into survival mode. Stress hormones rise, inflammation can increase, and rest and repair get put on hold. Your body is not broken—it is responding.
But here is the deeper truth: Often, what your body is responding to is not actual danger… but perceived danger. And this is where Scripture speaks so powerfully.
God Is Not Just Loving—He Is Safe
The Bible doesn’t just tell us that God loves us. It tells us that He is a place of safety:
“The Lord is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” (Psalm 91:2)
“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to him and are safe.” (Proverbs 18:10)
“God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.” (Psalm 46:1)
This is an invitation. God is not distant. He is not waiting for you to fix yourself first. He is saying: “Come here. You are safe with Me.”
Peace Is Not Just Spiritual—It’s Physical
One of the most overlooked truths in Scripture is that God’s peace is not just a feeling—it’s protective. Philippians 4:6-7 says,
"Don’t worry about anything… Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds…”
That word guard is powerful. It’s not passive. It’s active. God’s peace literally stands watch over your mind. Isaiah 26:3 says, “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you…” When your mind is at peace, your body begins to follow. You may not notice it right away, but your breathing slows, your shoulders relax, your system begins to come out of survival mode. This is what safety feels like.
Jesus Leads Us Into Rest, Not Striving
So many of us are trying to heal while still living in a constant state of urgency. But Jesus offers a completely different way. He says, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). In Exodus 33:14, He says, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” Rest is not laziness. Rest is where healing happens. Even in Scripture, we see God care for the whole person.
Consider Elijah—exhausted, overwhelmed, and afraid. God doesn’t correct him first. He lets him sleep. He feeds him. He meets his physical needs before speaking to his spirit. Why? Because the body needed to feel safe before the soul could receive truth.
Perfect Love Casts Out Fear
At the root of feeling unsafe is fear. And Scripture is clear, “Perfect love expels all fear…” (1 John 4:18). Fear and safety cannot coexist. Where fear dominates, the mind spirals, the body tightens, healing is blocked. But where God’s love is experienced the nervous system settles, trust begins to grow, healing can begin. This is why encountering God’s love is not optional in healing—it is essential.
Jesus Calms the Storm—Inside and Out
One of the most powerful pictures of this is when Jesus Christ calms the storm. In Mark 4:39, Jesus spoke to the storm and said, “Silence! Be still!” The storm around the disciples mirrored the fear within them. And Jesus didn’t just address the wind—He addressed the atmosphere of fear. The same is true for us. He still speaks peace over your anxious thoughts, over your overwhelmed body, and over the places that feel out of control.
Healing Begins With Safety
Here is the truth I want you to hold onto, your body does not need more striving. Your body needs to feel safe. And your soul will never fully feel safe apart from God. In Christ, you are covered and held. You are not in danger and you are not alone. Psalm 4:8 says, “I will lie down in peace and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe.” This is the place where healing begins. Not in fear, or urgency, or striving, but in resting in the safety of your Father.
A Gentle Invitation
Today, instead of asking, “What do I need to fix?” Ask, “Where can I let myself feel safe in God?” Maybe it looks like:
sitting quietly in His presence
meditating on His Word
turning off the noise for a moment
reminding your body, “I am safe with Him”
This is not ignoring your health. This is addressing it at the root. Because healing flows where there is safety. And in Christ, you are already held in the safest place you could ever be.
